Special education means specially designed instruction for a student who meets the criteria under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). These impairments are all based on educational needs (not medical terms or needs) and an education team must determine if an impairment(s) exists and there is a need for special education services. There are 11 areas that may be considered for an impairment(s) under IDEA.
