School District of River Falls - Cold Weather Guidelines for Recess

Recess is critically important to the mental and physical well-being of children. Whenever possible, we seek to have students playing outside for recess as a break from classroom-based and other indoor activities.

Here are some guidelines to help students dress appropriately based on the temperature:

Grades JK - 2

"Feels Like" Temperature ❄️	Requirement 🧣
40° - 49°	arms and legs are covered
9° - 39°	must wear coat, hat & mittens if snow & mud, must wear snow pants & boots
-10° & below	indoor recess

Grades 3-5

"Feels Like" Temperature ❄️	Requirement ⛄
33° & above	snow pants & boots are required to go off the blacktop with snow
1° - 32°	coat, hat & gloves all come outside arms & legs are covered snow pants & boots are required to go off the blacktop with snow
-9° - 0°	all gear on and zipped if unprepared, recess is in the office
-10° & below	indoor recess
