What is STEP?
The STEP Program allows community members to share their expertise with students and staff. This partnership enhances the school district's education program by bringing community members and students together to share their knowledge and experiences.
Who Can Participate?
STEP is open to adult community members, with preference given to senior citizens residing in the community. We will not add any new STEP participants during this school year.
Program Benefits
Program benefits extend to the participant, students, school staff, and the community. STEP participants will have the opportunity to share their talents, gain an intergenerational experience, and make a difference in a student's life.
Students will gain an appreciation for the valuable contributions that STEP participants make to the community and have a chance to establish a relationship with a positive role model, providing them with increased social and emotional support. Above and beyond another set of hands in the classroom, staff members will have the opportunity to demonstrate the many positive things happening in our schools on a day-to-day basis.
STEP participants are considered employees of the district and will receive an annual payment, based on an hourly wage, for up to 75 hours of service.
What is Expected of a STEP Participant?
STEP positions may be short-term or long-term based on need. Workers might tutor students during the school day, read to or with a child, help prepare special projects, assist with computers, chaperone field trips, assist with clerical work, enrichment activities, and more. The list is endless based on the skills and talents of our workers.
STEP assignments are made each school year, based on varying needs within the district. Each position is for one school year and will be re-evaluated at the beginning of each year.
Placement
Administrators, teachers, and staff will be asked to identify areas where they need help; then applicants will be matched to these areas of need, based on life skills and talents. Those selected will be required to interview and complete all necessary district employment requirements.
